Keratoconus is a degenerative eye disease when cornea gets thinner and has a shape of a pile. It is the most common form of corneal dystrophy, and about one in 1,000 patients has this problem. Keratoconus could lead to severe visual impairment. At an early stage, a patient has a blurred vision, and as the disease develops, vision becomes worse. At later stages, photophobia could develop, the feeling of constant fatigue, blinking, itching. Patients also often notice interference and inequality of contours of light sources. All of these are the signs of the disease.
If there are doubts that keratoconus is at stake, a doctor first examines the cornea using a slit lamp, then keratopachimetry is done, which allows the determination of the cornea’s thickness. Keratoconus is characterized by progressive decay of cornea.
Treatment of keratoconus – In the early stages, the changes of refraction are not significant and could easily be adapted to the correction of the spectrum. As the process develops, the only possible correction is by hard contact lenses. However, most patients experience problems with hard contact lenses, and they are willing to opt for an operation (transplantation of the cornea from a donor). This is an efficient and safe technology. It is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia using special surgical instruments.
